Wines of Portugal. Why are they So Special?

Wine Types
#Wines of Portugal.

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain.

It is a peaceful country of great natural beauty.

Portugal is a wine lover’s dream destination as the country offers unsurpassed and expected quality as well as old world charm and diversity of experience.

Fabulous new spa hotels and renovated historic mansions and monasteries have opened up in the last few years in the Portuguese wine country.

The Wines of Portugal are famous for their unique characteristics and qualities. They are very different from the wines produced elsewhere in the world.

What makes Portuguese wine different?

Grape blends in wine-making.

Portuguese wines are almost always blended and single grape wines are extremely rare.

By utilizing the individual-specific virtues of several different grapes a blend prepared  that produces the wine as a whole is of a higher quality.

Portugal’s red wines are often bold with firm structure and dark fruit flavor.

They are made from both indigenous grapes like Touriga Nacional and international varieties like Merlot.

They are Boisterous, full-bodied and with a great balance of fruit and acidity. They are very age-worthy.

A few years in a cellar brings forward plenty of subtleties and layers of flavour and aroma from the grapes used.

White Wine or Vinho Verde.

Vinho Verde is both a wine region and a type of wine.

While it translates to green wine, it means young wine.

That’s because the bottles are released within 3-6 months after harvest and drunk almost immediately.

Dry Wines –  Porto Wines.

Portugal is famous for its great dessert wine, Port.

Most of these wines come from native Portuguese grape varieties, of which the country has hundreds.

The best Portoguese wines are from the Douro wine region, where the majority of Port is produced.

Douro wine region

The most well-known wine region in Portugal is the Douro Valley.

The wines produced here have become legendary—in fact, UNESCO recently designated the valley a World Heritage site.
