What does Auslese mean? German winegrower Dr. Franz Werner Michel of Domdechant-Werner in the Rheinghau explains what Auslese means for German wines, including how the wines are harvested and vinified. He also touches on the concept of Grosses Gewaches and Erstes Gewaches, the “Grand Cru” and “Premier Cru” of dry German Rieslings. Dr. Werner was the long time head of the German Wine Institute and his estae has been a member of the VDP for eighty years.
