Why did you plant Saint George rootstock in a California vineyard?

Wine and grape grower Charlie Barra talks about planting St George rootstock in his organically farmed Mendocino, California vineyards in the 1950’s. Charlie talked to his Italian grandfather about which type to plant and selected the same that they had had success with in Piedmont.
