For today’s tasting, Master of Wine, David Allen, Wine Searcher’s Wine Director continued his series of tastings of the wines from the La Chablisienne cooperative with a bottle of their Chablis 1er Cru Cru Mont de Milieu 2019.

La Chablisienne is a large, cooperative, wine producer based in the Chablis region of France. They are known for their consistent quality and the age-worthiness of their top wines.

The co-operative was formed in 1923 when a number of growers, facing uncertain economic conditions, grouped together under the leadership of the Abbé Balitrand to establish a winery. La Chablisienne received finished wines from its members, blended them and sold them mostly on the wholesale market.

From the mid-1950s, however, the winery began to receive its supply as grapes or must, giving considerably more control over the winemaking process.

La Chablisienne has 300 members, whose vineyards cover nearly a quarter of the region’s 4700 hectares (11,600 acres) and include wines from all quality tiers, from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru level.

A highlight of the holdings is the Grenouilles Grand Cru vineyard, the majority of which has been owned by La Chablisienne since 2003. The two wines that come from this vineyard are released under the Château Grenouilles label, as the cooperative owns the house and farm buildings situated in the vineyard.

The modern winery, located within Chablis town, has twice the capacity needed, which gives the winemakers plenty of operational flexibility as they produce around 40 different wines. The top wines are likely to be aged in oak for an extended period, allowing the oak character to be fully integrated before release.
